Obituary

Barry Purdy Krewson, 75, of Oakland, Maryland, passed away on October 2, 2026, in Morgantown, West Virginia, following a short illness.

Born on August 8, 1951, to Dorothy Ruth Krewson and Purdy Hellings Krewson, Barry was raised in East Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. He attended East Lansdowne Public School and graduated from Lansdowne Aldan High School in 1969. His work ethic began early: as a boy, he delivered newspapers and spent summers working on fishing boats in Wildwood, New Jersey. During high school, he worked at gas stations and Noel Schmidt Furniture. He also served in the Army Reserve during the Vietnam War era.

Barry built a career in construction and estimating, working for Healy & Long for many years before establishing Newport Contractors, a concrete construction company. He took great pride in the projects he helped build, including the Bell Atlantic Tower, the Center City Marriott, the Airport Marriott, and Parc Rittenhouse buildings in Philadelphia. Anyone riding with him could expect a detour or a pointed finger toward a building, followed by the story of his part in bringing it to life.

But the houses he built for himself and others held a special place in his heart. He poured himself into them, caring about the details that made a house a home. Although he retired at 52, Barry never stopped working with his hands. He continued building, contracting, consulting, and taking on projects for anyone who needed his help.

In 1974, Barry married Peggy Smythe, and together they raised two sons, Barry and Daniel. Having endured hardship and loss in his own childhood, he was determined that his sons would grow up knowing they were loved. They sometimes teased him for being sentimental, but neither ever doubted his love. He was deeply proud of them and remained their devoted father throughout his life.

On March 22, 2004, Barry married Mary Ann in Garrett County, Maryland. They made their full-time home in Oakland, where he enjoyed life at Deep Creek Lake, golfing, fishing, boating, cooking, trying new recipes, and putzing around in his workshops. His involvement with the Lions Club was especially meaningful to him, particularly helping the blind campers.

Above all, Barry loved people. Wherever he went, he seemed to know someone, or soon would. He truly knew no strangers. He could strike up a conversation with almost anyone and turn an ordinary encounter into a friendship. Since his passing, the many messages from those who knew him have carried a common theme: Barry made people feel seen, heard, and special.

He looked down on no one. He stood up for people who were struggling or being treated unfairly, even when doing so came at a cost to himself. Helping was more than something he did; it was part of who he was. His generosity, ready conversation, and open affection left a lasting mark on the people around him.

Barry is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Krewson; his sons, Barry Vincent Krewson of Bozeman, Montana, and Daniel Krewson-always "Danny" to his dad-and Daniel's husband, Sam Duplessis, of Philadelphia; his sister, Barbara "Barbe" Curran, and her husband, Bob; his niece, Kim, and her husband, Doug; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Glenn Krewson.

Friends will be received at the Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A. - Oakland Chapel, 21 N 2nd St, Oakland on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 10 to 11:30 AM. A brief sharing of remembrances will begin at 11:15 AM. A celebration of Barry's life will follow at the Caddyshack, Oakland Golf Club.

Additional services and burial will be held in Pennsylvania, with details to announced.
