Clifford C. DeWitt, 90, of Oakland, passed away on October 9, 2025, at Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born on February 18, 1935, in Crellin, he was the son of the late John William and Emma Viola (Ashby) DeWitt.
Clifford honorably served in the US Army before embarking on a distinguished career at the Garrett County Courthouse. He worked as a Deputy Clerk for the Circuit Court from 1959 to 1978, was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court in 1978, and served until 1990. He later served as Chief Judge of the Orphans' Court from 1994 to 2014, retiring on December 1, 2014. A devoted member of the Crellin Assembly of God Church, where he played the piano for over 75 years. He was a talented musician, accompanying his church and various gospel quartets. Clifford was also deeply involved in the Garrett County Historical Society, serving as Past President and a member of its Board of Directors. Passionate about history, he was an avid Civil War enthusiast, enjoyed traveling, and had a fondness for antique cars.
He is survived by his brother, J. Robert DeWitt and wife Linda R. (Faulk) DeWitt, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Betty L. Martin, Stanley W. DeWitt, Harold E. DeWitt, Marie E. Skipper, E. Loretta Sines, Wanda C. Steiding, and Peggy L. McCartney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Garrett County Historical Society.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, from 4 to 7 PM, at the Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A. - Oakland Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 11 AM in the Crellin Assembly of God Church with Rev. H. Ray Beahm and Pastor Mark Howard officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held privately in the Gortner Union Church Cemetery.
