Jeanine Susan (Lucas) Bachtel, 68, passed away on September 19, 2026, after a brief illness, which she fought with the same strength and determination she brought to everything.
Born April 24, 1958, in Oakland, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Genevieve Lucas. Jeanine graduated from Southern Garrett High School and later earned her Bachelor degree from University of Maryland.
Jeanine worked for many years at Frostburg State University before moving south to UNC Charlotte in search of more sunshine. She loved her work, was highly regarded by her colleagues, and took great pride in everything she accomplished at both universities.
She was a proud mother to Keri, Andy, and Cheston, but her favorite role of all was being "Grammy" and "Grammy J" to her grandchildren. Bryce, Brooklyn, Braxton, Chase, and River brought her more joy than anything else in life, and she would drop anything to be there for them.
Jeanine embraced life fully. She loved to travel and felt most at home at the beach. She never passed up a good time with family and friends, from concerts and NASCAR races to golf outings and football games.
She is survived by her children, Andrew Bachtel and Keri (David) Rogers; her grandchildren, Bryce, Brooklyn, Braxton, Chase, and River; her siblings, Barbara Lucas, Adam Lucas, and Paul (Kay) Lucas; and many other loving family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Cheston Bachtel; and her sister-in-law, Angela Lucas.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 12, 2026, at the White Barn at Lucas Farm in Oakland, Maryland. Family and friends are invited to stay and share lunch following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeanine's memory to the American Cancer Society.
