Joanne Louise Shahan, 92, of Oakland, passed away on May 12, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her family. Born on April 19, 1934, in Oakland, she was the daughter of the late Willard and Vera (Adams) Dunbar.
Joanne dedicated her working life to a series of roles that reflected her strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, beginning with her early years at Sterling Processing before becoming the proud owner and operator of Shorty's Bar and Grill, where she welcomed friends and neighbors with warmth and hospitality. She later served as Owner and Bookkeeper for Shahan Lumber Company, bringing the same reliability and attention to detail to the family business. A faithful member of Crossroads Church, she found joy and community in her faith. In her free time, Joanne loved to square dance as an active member of the Mt. Top Promenaders, and she cherished her lively trips to the casinos and spending time at home watching game shows. Above all, she treasured every moment spent with her family, creating memories that will be held close forever.
She is survived by her son, Charles E. Shahan Jr., and wife Beverly; three grandchildren, Dionne Bolyard and husband Bobby, Scott Shahan and wife Erin, and Michael Shahan and wife Katie; five great grandchildren, Haylee Lipscomb and husband Aron, McKenna Ragione and husband Brody, Tristan Shahan, and Kendall Shahan; great-great grandchildren, Carter, Kamden, and Colsen Lipscomb, and Adalynn and Harper Ragione.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Charles E. Shahan; her brother, Thomas Dunbar; sisters-in-law, Francis Dunbar and Barbara Dunbar; and special friend, Louis Ricci.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the amazing care given to Joanne by her caregivers, Brenda, Nancy, Robin, and Katie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Garrett County or Cindy's Fund.
Friends will be received on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 10 AM to 12 PM, at the Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A. - Oakland Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 12 PM in the funeral home with Pastor Brandon Hutzel officiating. Interment will follow in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
