Mae Lorein Custer

Mae Lorein (Steyer) Custer, 97, of Oakland, passed away on July 1, 2026, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home. Born on May 1, 1929, on the family farm in the Ryans Glade community of Garrett County, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Etta Grace (Thompson) Steyer.

Mae graduated from Oakland High School. She and her husband bought the family farm on Sand Flat Road in 1953, where she raised her family in a Godly home and lived with her husband until 2020. She and her husband made many friends and acquaintances selling sweet corn and other produce from their machine shed for over 30 years. In her free time, she loved spending time with her family. She also had a love for flowers.

She is survived by her three children, Robert Custer and wife Patty, Linda Rush and husband Rick, and Judy Falls and husband Ricky; nine grandchildren, Jared, Aimee, Erin, Nicholas, Jenna, Carey, Emma, Caitlin, and Cori; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Hubert, whom she married in September of 1949; ten siblings, Wilma (Steyer) Bittinger and husband Lenwood, Mabel (Steyer) Fisher Isaacs and husband Don, Lottie (Steyer) Harvey and husband Grant, Arthur Steyer and wife Lena, Jessee (Steyer) Beckman and husband Clarence, Helen Steyer, Harold Steyer and wife Betty, Ronald Steyer and wife May, Samuel Steyer and wife Evelyn, and John Steyer and wife Lois; and one grandson, Joshua.

Friends will be received on Monday, July 6, 2026, from 5 to 8 PM at Pleasant View Baptist Church, 8931 Garrett Highway, Oakland, MD. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 10 AM in the church with Pastor Mark Weeks officiating. Private interment will be held at Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
