Mark Joseph Schoonmaker

May 16, 1973 — December 16, 2025

Salt Lake City, UT

On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Mark Joseph Schoonmaker of Salt Lake City, UT, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52. Mark was born on May 16, 1973, in Chattanooga, TN, to Mary Rosalie Terrant and the late Rev. Larry Schoonmaker.

Mark was a graduate of Tucker County High School, where his love of the outdoors and adventure began as a ski instructor and whitewater rafting guide. That same enthusiasm took him to the New River in Fayetteville, WV, and on to the mountains and rivers of Utah, where he truly found his home. He worked for 20 years for Surefoot in Canyons Village, Park City, UT, as a boot technician and salesman. His coworkers and loyal customers became lifelong friends.

Mark is survived by his wife, Ann Rooney of Salt Lake City, UT; his mother, Mary Rosalie Winters of Eglon, WV; his sister, Stephanie and husband Allan Dumire of Morgantown, WV; nieces and nephews, Hannah and Kasey Sapp, Bethany Evans, Zachary and Donna Evans, Tyler and Angel Lambert, Eddie Schoonmaker, Kaiden Schoonmaker, and Dylan Dumire; great-nieces and great-nephews, Connor, Grayson, Holden, Ainslee, and Beau; along with a host of aunts, uncles, neighbors, coworkers, and friends who will miss him very much.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Larry Schoonmaker; step-father, Keith Winters; sister, Christina Evans; and brother, Matthew Schoonmaker.

Mark met Ann in 2005 while working in Utah, and they were inseparable from that moment on. Together, they shared their home with loyal companions Roxy, Olive, Anya, and Kevin. In 2020, Mark and Ann moved to a neighborhood they affectionately called “the family of Nocturne Drive.” They enjoyed many wonderful get-togethers and hangouts. Mark’s family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for all that their neighbors have done for Ann in the days since Mark’s passing.

There will be a celebration of life held in the Summer of 2026.
