Marvin Galen Guthrie

Marvin G. "Red" Guthrie, 81, of Mountain Lake Park, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at home following a brief but valiant battle with cancer.

Marvin was on born January 7, 1945, in Oakland, MD. He was the son of the late John Henry and Mabel Irene (DeWitt) Guthrie. He graduated from Southern High School in 1963, and entered the US Army in 1964. There he proudly served his country for more than three decades, including a year in Vietnam, and received a Bronze Star. Marvin fulfilled his full-time military duties in 1970, but remained a member of the Maryland National Guard, earning the rank of Sergeant First Class. Marvin retired in 2007, from Erie Insurance, where he was a field adjuster.

Also in 1964, Marvin married Sylvia M. Smith. They shared almost 62 years of marriage, celebrating the milestone of 60 years in 2024, with family and friends. Their lives were enriched by the birth of each of their five children: Quintin (Teresa) Guthrie, Norman (Glenna) Guthrie, Marvin 'Dino' (Vicki) Guthrie, Sonya (Preston) Boerner, and Christie (Jason) Reckart. Their family suffered the loss of their firstborn son, Quintin, in 2022, also from cancer.

Marvin was always active in his kids' sports activities. He coached Little League for several years, taking a team all the way to a championship one year. Later, he coached bowling for the Southern High School bowling team. As grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, whatever sport they chose to be part of, Marvin was usually seen on the sidelines, encouraging and cheering each one on. This is something he did up until just recently, when his health declined. Golf was one of Marvin's favorite pastimes. He was a member of Charlie's Angels at the Oakland Country Club. Over the years, he enjoyed collecting coins, race cars, and stamps. He also enjoyed watching sports and playing bingo.

After raising their children in the Pleasant Valley area near Oakland, they moved to Mountain Lake Park in 2008. Their home became a hubspot for countless drop-ins, family gatherings; the perfect haven for their kids, grandkids, etc. to drop in and visit, grab a snack, or catch a nap! Marvin and Sylvia became snowbirds for several years, spending winters in Florida. They traveled to many places over the years, often accompanying Sylvia's father to military reunions across the United States, enjoying every minute.

Left behind to cherish wonderful memories of a life well-lived is his loving wife, Sylvia M. (Smith) Guthrie, and one sister, Lora May Beeghly, Oakland. In addition to his four surviving children, he will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Trista (Guthrie) Hotsinpiller, Quintin Jr., Jake Guthrie, Amelia Guthrie, Jeremy Guthrie, Myka (Guthrie) DeWitt, Topanga Halterman, Taya Guthrie, Tyler Guthrie, Haley Hinebaugh, Allison Hinebaugh, Kodie Dawson, Kayla (Dawson) Coddington, Kasie Reckart, and Julia Reckart; 20 great grandchildren that he truly adored; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Quintin Guthrie, and four siblings, Leroy Guthrie, Charles Guthrie, Betty Freeland, and Barbara Dunbar.

Friends will be received on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A. - Oakland Chapel from 2 to 5 PM, and on Monday, March 9, 2026, at 10 AM in the Loch Lynn Church of God, followed by a funeral service at 11 AM with Marvin's son-in-law, Pastor Preston Boerner officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, near Swanton, MD. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the combined honor guard of the American Legion Post #71 and Deer Park VFW Post #10077, as well as Ft Meade.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Cindy's Fund, PO Box 182, Oakland, MD 21550 or Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550. Both organizations were very much appreciated by Marvin's family during his illness.
