Mary Jane Gnegy

December 5, 1937 — December 18, 2025

Oakland

Mary Jane (Roth) Gnegy, 88, of Oakland died on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, WV. Born on December 5, 1937, in Horse Shoe Run, WV, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Webster and Virginia Elizabeth (Mosser) Roth.

Mary Jane was a faithful member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Red House, where she served on the church council, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, led the music and worship committee, and shared her tremendous talent as one of the church's organist for over 60 years. She was also an officer of The Red House Lutheran Cemetery Association.

She worked, in earlier years, at the Mtn. Lake Park Hotel, in the warehouse office for the HP Store, and at Bausch & Lomb. She retired from Garrett County Community Action after serving many years as Finance Director and then as General Services Director.

She lovingly volunteered her time to Girl Scouts of America, leading a Junior troop with her dear friend, Anna Casteel, and later starting a Girl Scout Troop for girls with special needs so they could enjoy the benefits of scouting. Mary Jane also taught piano and organ lessons, building the talent of others for many years. She was an avid supporter of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Mary Jane will be greatly missed.

Mary Jane enjoyed baking, canning, gardening and growing all kinds of flowers and tomato plants from seed, sewing and making clothes for her kids and grandkids including prom/homecoming gowns, dresses for dances, and choir robes and church banners. She was very talented in decorating cakes for all occasions including very extravagant wedding cakes for family (and even transporting/building them at various venues!).

Mary Jane is survived by her children, Diane Donham and husband Randy of Oakland, Linda Lindsey and husband Rob of McHenry, and Samuel Gnegy and wife Cindy of Oakland; grandchildren, Victoria Leap and husband John, Jennifer Schaeffer and husband Kevin, Joni Gnegy, Shanie Gnegy, and Megan Lindsey; great grandchildren, Ava Leap, Abbi Leap, and Nora Schaeffer; and a number of nieces and nephews and their children that were also very dear to her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Smith Gnegy, in 2014; and her brothers, Earl E. Roth and wife Alice, and Donald G. Roth and wife Elaine.

Friends will be received on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 3 to 6 PM at the Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A.-Oakland Chapel, 21 N 2nd St., Oakland and on Monday, December 22, 2025, from 10 to 11 AM at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Red House, 3281 Garrett Hwy, Oakland.
