Russell E. Stewart, 80, of Oakland, passed away on February 16, 2025, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. Born on December 6, 1945, in Vindex, he was the son of the late Alston D. and Eliza (Davis) Stewart.
Russell was a proud graduate of Southern High School, where he laid the foundation for a life defined by curiosity, service, and hands-on creativity. He earned his associate's degree from Garrett Community College, further sharpening the skills that would shape his many passions. Russell answered the call to serve his country as a Military Police officer in the U.S. Army, stationed in Thailand, an experience that instilled in him discipline and a deep sense of duty. Back home, he found joy in a wide array of pursuits: piloting model planes through the sky, tracking game while hunting, casting lines in peaceful fishing spots, and losing himself in the rhythmic challenge of deciphering Morse code. A true outdoorsman and craftsman, he tended his garden with care, crafted wood into lasting pieces, and meticulously drafted architectural plans for buildings, blending precision with imagination in every line he drew. Russell lived a full, multifaceted life grounded in service, nature, and the quiet satisfaction of creating with his hands and mind.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol V. Stewart, to whom he was married on December 31, 1973; two children, Barbara Rogillio and Joseph Metheny, and his wife, Hallie; and two siblings, Shirley Rose Kinser and Wayne Stewart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eleven siblings.
Russell's request for cremation was honored. There are no services scheduled at this time.
The Fredlock & Fenner Funeral Homes, P.A. - Oakland Chapel is honored to be serving the Stewart family.
