Verna Lee Wills, 82, of Oakland, MD, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on October 24, 2025. Born on August 14, 1943, in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Regent Eugene (Baldwin) Smith.
Mrs. Wills graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria, VA, in 1961. After 35 years of government service, she retired from the US Government in 2002. During her 30-year career, she worked for the Internal Revenue Service, the US Army, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Health Care Financing Administration, and the Farmers Home Administration. In retirement, she loved spending time with her family and friends. Before maintaining a more permanent residence at their vacation home in Garrett County, she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Ellicott City, MD.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, William R. Wills, Jr.; son, William R. Wills III of Phoenix, MD; grandchildren, Andrew Hallford, Heather M. Hallford, Samantha Lee Wills; and great-grandchild, Kaia Hallford.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah M. Hallford, and daughter-in-law, Kimberly A. Wills.
Verna's wishes to be cremated have been honored, and memorial services are yet to be determined.
